Jesper de Jong reached the third-round of a Masters 1000 for the second time this year in Shanghai, as he defeated Miami Open champion Jakub Mensik in round two. His run ended after a straight sets defeat to Felix Auger Aliassime but the Dutchman will take confidence from his performances.
He will face Marton Fucsovics in the first-round of the Stockholm Open. The Hungarian’s form has taken a huge dip ever since he won the title in Winston-Salem two months ago. He then lost in round one of the US Open and failed to win either of his matches at the Davis Cup. His Asian swing saw him defeat an out-of-form Frances Tiafoe in round one of Tokyo, before losing to Brandon Nakashima in the next stage. He then competed in Shanghai but lost in round one to Jaume Munar.
De Jong ended the Asian swing the stronger of the two, but Fucsovics has made two indoor finals in his career and his game matches up well with those conditions. His solid baseline game and huge groundstrokes may just give him the edge.
