Jesper de Jong overcame a scare to get past Yi Zhou in the first-round. The Dutchman served for the first set at 5-3 but was broken, with the world number 308 taking it on a tiebreak. De Jong managed to recover by dominating the second to force a decider. Both players were solid on serve in the third set, with no break points on offer, but De Jong wrestled control in the second tiebreak of the match to win 6-7 6-2 7-6 after two hours and 44 minutes.
Jakub Mensik won his first two matches at the China Open to advance to the quarter-finals. He renewed acquaintances with Alex de Minaur in the last eight, having faced him just a week earlier at the Laver Cup, but the Czech retired at 4-1 down in the first set due to a knee problem.
The 20-year-old will have had a few days’ rest but his fitness will be a question mark heading into Shanghai. Nevertheless, the fast conditions are likely to further utilise his booming serve as a weapon and he will likely win a lot of free points against De Jong if it’s firing.
