Jesper de Jong vs Francesco Passaro prediction
Jesper de Jong is coming off the back of an encouraging run at the Italian Open, as he won four matches including qualifying to make the third-round, losing to world number one Jannik Sinner. This included a surprisingly dominant 6-0 6-2 win over Monte-Carlo Masters semi-finalist Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The Dutchman had struggled for form up to that point after a promising start to his clay court season in late March, as he made the final of the Murcia Open and the semi-finals in Girona.
Francesco Passaro will be his opponent in round one. The Italian was forced to miss a month and a half of action due to injury but made a solid return at his home event in Rome, beating Grigor Dimitrov on his way to reaching the third-round. He continued this run of form last week in Turin, getting to the quarter-finals before he was forced to retire midway through his match with Yunchaokete Bu.
They’ve played once before at Challenger level, with De Jong defeating Passaro in three sets last year in Cagliari on clay. Both players are capable on the surface and we expect a close match, but we lean towards the Dutchman making it through.
