Jenson Brooksby came through a five set thriller to advance at the US Open. He was a set and a break up against Aleksandar Vukic, but the Australin fought back and it eventually headed to a decider. Brooksby raised his level in the fifth to win 6-3 6-7 6-4 3-6 6-4 after three hours and 47 minutes.
Flavio Cobolli will be his next opponent. The Wimbledon quarter-finalist was not at his best but managed to come through against fellow Italian Francesco Passaro, overcoming a scare to win in five sets. Cobolli was two sets to one up and went an early break up in the fourth, but struggles in his service games saw him broken on four separate occasions as Passaro levelled the match up and broke in the decider. The world number 26 got back on track to win 7-5 4-6 6-4 3-6 6-3.
Brooksby leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a win over Cobolli three years ago in Rome. Though the Italian is considerably higher ranked, he will have to perform better if he is to get past the American. We expect this to be decided in four or five sets.
