Jelena Ostapenko powered into her fourth Doha semi final with a confident win over Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
The two-time finalist came up clutch in the key moments to sink the Italian lucky loser by a 7-5 6-4 scoreline.
The Latvian will now face-off with Victoria Mboko as she bids to make it back-to-back finals at a tournament where she clearly feels at her best.
Mboko once again demonstrated why she is seen as a star of the future - but also very much in the present - as she snapped Elena Rybakina’s winning streak with a shock 7-5 4-6 6-4 victory.
This will be a first meeting between the two and it should make for a match of great shot-making. Strangely, the Canadian probably plays with the greater maturity with Ostapenko lacking patience and playing high risk tennis.
The Latvian loves this tournament but there’s something about Mboko’s pathway here and after taking down Rybakina and Mirra Andreeva, she should have the belief and resilience needed to reach another WTA 1000 final.
