Former French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko faces Dayana Yastremska in what promises to be a tough first round encounter.
The world number 24 has a 6-6 record in Stuttgart and reached the last eight in 2018 but has lost her last two matches at the tournament.
The 27-year-old is featuring in her second event on the dirt having lost to Danielle Collins in the round of 16 in Charleston last time out. However, a run to the final in Doha in February has helped the Latvian turn her form as she had started to drift towards leaving the top 40.
Yastremska came through qualifying with two routine straight-sets wins and is heading back in the right direction after a heavy loss of points at the Australian Open saw her leave the top 70.
This will be their third meeting with Ostapenko winning their most recent one at the Australian Open in 2023 after Yastremska had prevailed a year earlier on the grass of Birmingham.
The Latvian may well have edge on clay with her tendency to flip between purple patches and leaking errors making it quite possible this could go the distance. We like Ostapenko and her heavy-hitting for this one though as her superior record on the dirt should see her move within four of a century of victories on the surface.
