Jelena Ostapenko safely booked her place in the third round of Charleston with a 7-5 6-2 win over Louisa Chirico, and the 2017 French Open champion can now look forward to a match with Danielle Collins.
Collins got her clay court season underway with a comfortable 6-3 6-1 win over Robin Montgomery, not even conceding a break point during the whole match. The defending champion won 80% of points on her first serve and proved why she is one of the favourites for the title but will have a much sterner test in the shape of Ostapenko.
Indeed, the Latvian does lead the head-to-head 2-1, with victories in Miami and Abu Dhabi, though Collins did win their last encounter at the San Diego Open in September 2023.
These two have never faced each other on clay before and are pretty evenly matched, but the fundamentals for Collins are strong after a fine serving performance in round two, and she should have enough to pull through.
