Jaume Munar impressed at the Japan Open, advancing from the qualifying stages to the semi-finals. The Spaniard produced one of the shocks of the first-round with a win over third seed Taylor Fritz, and then followed that up with victories over Jaime Faria and Kyrian Jacquet. He took the first set in the last four against seven-time major champion Carlos Alcaraz, before losing in three. That was his best tour-level result of the campaign.

Munar faces Jenson Brooksby in the first-round of the Shanghai Masters. The American beat Sebastian Baez and Lorenzo Sonego to advance to the quarter-finals in Chengdu. However, he would go on to lose to Nikoloz Basilashvili in straight sets. That was his joint-best result of the season, following further last eight finishes in Dubai and Los Cabos. It’s not been a strong campaign for Brooksby overall, with 23 losses from 39 matches, and he has dropped outside of the world’s top 100.

Munar has to be regarded as the firm favourite after his performances in Tokyo.
