Jaume Munar heads into the US Open on the back of a decent showing in Winston-Salem as he made the quarter-finals, knocking defending champion Lorenzo Sonego out along the way. He has advanced to two semi-finals on the ATP Tour this season and they were both on hard court, in Hong Kong and Dallas during the earlier part of the season.
Jaime Faria enters the draw as a lucky loser. The Portuguese lost his final match of qualifying to Ugo Blanchet in straight sets. He did enjoy a productive Challenger event in Sumter, as he got through to the semi-finals but lost to eventual winner Mattia Bellucci in straight sets. He is currently ranked 118 in the world.
Faria does lead the head-to-head 1-0 after beating Munar as a lucky loser in the second-round of the Rio Open earlier this year. The Spaniard is in better form now and should be able to get revenge here with a victory.
