There is positive momentum behind Jaume Munar as he begins his Australian Open campaign. He started the year with two losses at the United Cup, but he pushed Taylor Fritz all the way in his second match, even holding a match point. He then competed in Adelaide and won his first two matches, which included a comeback win against Francisco Cerundolo, to make his first quarter-final of the season. The Spaniard lost to eventual champion Tomas Machac. Munar improved in 2025 and is close to breaking into the top 30 for the first time.
Dalibor Svrcina is his first-round opponent. He began his season in Auckland but fell to a defeat in the first qualifying round to Hamad Medjedovic. Svrcina reached his first ATP quarter-final at the Hangzhou Open in the autumn last year.
These two played each other at this very stage of the event three years ago, with Svrcina winning in three sets as a qualifier. That remains his only victory at a Grand Slam. Munar is much improved nowadays and will want to exact some revenge here.
