Jasmine Paolini begins her campaign in round two after receiving a bye. She had a strong China Open, making the semi-finals without dropping a set, before a tight three set loss to Amanda Anisimova. Paolini had also played a starring role in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals, winning all her singles matches as Italy retained their title. She has won six of her last seven matches overall.
Yue Yuan came through a close match in the first-round of the Wuhan Open as she beat Lucia Bronzetti 7-6 7-6. The Chinese player saved a remarkable 12 out of a possible 15 break point opportunities, but she will need to be more resolute on serve if she is to cause Paolini problems.
Paolini leads the head-to-head 3-0 and 2-0 on hard court. They played each other at this stage of the event last year, with the two-time Grand Slam finalist winning in straight sets. A similar result is highly probable here.
