Jasmine Paolini vs Veronika Erjavec prediction

Jasmine Paolini makes her return to action at the US Open. The Italian has not appeared on tour since her round-of-16 loss at Wimbledon to Marta Kostyuk. Paolini has been dealing with a left foot injury, which forced her to withdraw from all of the North American hard court events leading up to the slam, including the Cincinnati Open, where she reached the final last year. The two-time Grand Slam singles finalist had not been enjoying the strongest of seasons up to the injury, only making one semi-final in Merida.

She plays Veronika Erjavec in round one. Erjavec has lost her last four matches overall, with the latest coming at the WTA 125k event in Philadelphia to Mary Stoiana. She has only won two of her seven matches on hard courts this season, with her best results occurring on clay.

Despite a lack of match sharpness, Paolini is the clear favourite to beat Erjavec and advance to the second-round of the US Open.
