Jasmine Paolini will be hoping for an upturn in form when she competes in Merida. The Italian is currently on a three-match losing run after a poor start to the year. She was defeated by Iva Jovic in the third-round of the Australian Open and followed that up with early exits in Doha and Dubai to Maria Sakkari and Alexandra Eala respectively.
She faces Priscilla Hon after receiving a bye in the first-round. Hon only entered the tournament as a lucky loser but advanced after a three set win over home favourite Renata Zarazua. The Australian was 3-1 down in the decider but found another level to win 6-2 2-6 6-4 after two hours and 36 minutes.
Paolini will hope to get some wins under her belt in order to restore some confidence after a tough run of results, and it’s likely to start with a comfortable win over Hon.
