Jasmine Paolini vs Lucrezia Stefanini prediction

Jasmine Paolini marked her return from injury with a hard-fought victory over Veronika Erjavec in the first-round of the US Open. Playing her first match since Wimbledon, the Italian was forced into a deciding set after Erjavec fought back to take the second. Paolini was broken when serving for the match, but responded immediately by breaking her opponent in the very next game to seal a 6-3 3-6 6-4 victory.

She faces compatriot Lucrezia Stefanini for a place in the third-round. Stefanini, who entered the main draw as a qualifier, made it four straight wins overall as she beat Dayana Yastremska in three sets. Stefanini dominated the decider to win 6-1 3-6 6-1.

Paolini understandably took some time to rediscover her match sharpness, but she will have benefited from getting a competitive match under her belt. The two-time Grand Slam finalist should be viewed as the clear favourite to come through this one.
