Jaqueline Cristian is enjoying a solid debut in the main draw of the Indian Wells Open and claimed something of a scalp in the second round when she recovered from losing the first set against Leylah Fernandez to eventually defeat the 27th seed 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
Lightning must now strike twice for Cristian as the Romanian takes on sixth seed Jasmine Paolini, although it’s fair to say the Italian is yet to really get going in Singles this year. The two-time Grand Slam finalist had a wobble against Iva Jovic in the second round but battled her to way to a three-set victory and she will now aim to reach the last 16 at Indian Wells for the second year in a row.
The pair have two previous meetings, but with both of those coming on clay courts on the ITF circuit some time ago, they don’t hold much relevance here. Ultimately, Paolini has not been at her best recently and has to be on her guard here against an opponent with nothing to lose, but the sixth seed is tipped to prevail in three sets.
