Jannik Sinner clinched qualification for the semi-finals of the ATP Finals after defeating Alexander Zverev for the fifth match in a row. The Italian won in straight sets, but it was not all plain sailing for the four-time Grand Slam champion, as he was forced to save seven break points in total. Zverev had opportunities in both sets, but Sinner came through to win 6-4 6-3. He extended his indoor winning record to 28 matches, and he has now won seven ATP Finals matches in a row without losing a set.
He goes up against Ben Shelton to round out the group stage. Shelton was eliminated from the competition after losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime in his second match, making it two defeats out of two. He took the first set, with the second going to a tiebreak, but a costly double fault at set point saw the Canadian draw level. Auger-Aliassime broke at the end of the third to win 4-6 7-6(6) 7-5.
Sinner leads the head-to-head 7-1 and 2-0 indoors. Shelton won their first meeting in Shanghai two years ago, but the Italian has won the last seven matches, all without dropping a set. Their last match was at the end of last month, with Sinner winning 6-3 6-3 in the quarter-finals of the Vienna Open on his way to winning the title.
Shelton does not have the return game or the tactical variety to disrupt Sinner, especially indoors, and this is likely to be yet another straight sets win for the Italian.
