Jannik Sinner began the defence of his US Open title with a crushing win over Vit Koprvia, dropping just four games in his first-round match as he won 6-1 6-1 6-2. Sinner’s last match saw him withdraw from the final of the Cincinnati Open against Carlos Alcaraz due to illness, but he seemed back to full health here, thrashing his opponent after just one hour and 38 minutes. Sinner has won the last three hard court slams and is eyeing a fifth major title.
Alexei Popyrin will be his opponent in round two. The Australian defeated Emil Ruusuvouri in three sets to book a meeting with the world number one. He served well, with 19 aces in total, as he came from a break down in the third to win 6-3 6-4 7-6.
Popyrin leads the head-to-head, beating a 19-year-old Sinner in the second-round of the Madrid four years ago. There are certainly far tougher second-round opponents than Popyrin, who boasts a Masters 1000 title, but Sinner looked back to his dominant best in the first-round and should still get through with ease.
