Jannik Sinner began the defence of his title in strong fashion as he beat Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets. The Italian had beaten Auger-Aliassime in the final of the Paris Masters just a week earlier and made a strong start here, not losing a single point on his first serve in the opening set as he broke late on to take the lead. The Canadian seemed to be struggling with a calf problem in the second as Sinner raced clear to win 7-5 6-1. He extended his phenomenal indoor hardcourt winning streak to 27 matches.
He now goes up against Alexander Zverev. The world number three, who has won this event on two previous occasions, also got off to a winning start in Turin as he beat Ben Shelton. Zverev comfortably took the opener and produced a stunning turnaround in the second set tiebreak as he saved three set points and reeled off five points in a row to win 6-3 7-6 (6).
Sinner leads the head-to-head 5-4 and 3-0 indoors, while he has also won their last four meetings. They’ve faced each other on two occasions in the space of less than three weeks. Sinner came from a set down to beat Zverev in the Vienna Open final before thrashing him 6-0 6-1 a week later in the semi-finals of the Paris Masters on his way to winning the tournament. Zverev put in a strong display in his first group stage match, but Sinner is likely to prove too much for the German once again.
