It remains to be seen as to whether Jannik Sinner will compete in this competition alongside Katerina Siniakova after the Wimbledon men’s singles champion had to retire after just five games of the ATP Cincinnati Open final against Carlos Alcaraz due to illness. Sinner was 5-0 down at the time but clearly not well and in the end the final came to a premature end.
Whether Sinner is fit to play here or not, this opens the door for Alexander Zverev and Belinda Bencic, who each do have plenty of doubles experience. Indeed, Bencic is an Olympic silver medalist in doubles competition. The pair even faced each other in mixed doubles at the Hopman Cup final all the way back in 2018, with Bencic and Roger Federer coming out on top against Zverev and Angelique Kerber.
Zverev and Bencic are likely to pose strong competition over the course of this event and should be backed to get the better of Sinner and Siniakova. In reality, it would be a big surprise if Sinner is in any sort of condition that would see him take to the court here.
