Janice Tjen received a bye in round one as the 32nd seed at the Cincinnati Open. She lost her opening match in Toronto to Liudmila Samsonova in two close sets. Tjen has struggled this season, with 21 losses from 35 matches. She is yet to reach a quarter-final, with her best result of the campaign being a third-round appearance in Dubai back in February.

She plays Viktorija Golubic in round two. The Swiss easily defeated Alycia Parks in the previous round. Golubic broke on four separate occasions and saved all seven break points on offer to clinch a 6-2 6-2 win after one hour and 10 minutes. She also reached the third-round of the Canadian Open and has won three of her last four matches overall. Golubic was beaten by eventual winner Iga Swiatek in Toronto.
