Janice Tjen reached the third-round of a WTA event for just the second time this season as she got past Viktorija Golubic in three sets. Tjen was pushed all the way by Golubic but won 7-6 (8) 5-7 7-5. It was a huge test of her resilience, especially after a difficult season. Despite results not going her way, she has been competitive recently, as she pushed Anna Kalinskaya to a deciding set at the Washington Open.
She faces Mirra Andreeva next. The Roland Garros champion could hardly have been more impressive in her opening match as she dismantled Oleksandra Oliynykova. Andreeva suffered an early loss at the Canadian Open to Leylah Fernandez, but she dropped just one game here, winning 6-1 6-0. The early games in the match were competitive, with Andreeva saving seven break points overall.
It’s difficult to look past another comfortable win for Andreeva here, and Tjen will have to produce her best display of the season to even have a chance.
