Janice Tjen’s difficult season continued at the Washington Open last week as she was beaten by Anna Kalinskaya in the second-round. Tjen had two match points, but ended up losing in the deciding set tiebreak. She is yet to reach a quarter-final in 2026, with her best result being a third-round appearance in Dubai back in February.
She faces Liudmila Samsonova in the first-round of the Canadian Open. Samsonova showed some form in Washington, as she came from a set down to beat Madison Keys in her opening match and then defeated Xinyu Wang to reach her third quarter-final of the campaign. However, she was beaten by Diana Shnaider in the last eight. It’s still been a difficult season for the Russian, as her ranking has dropped to outside the top 60.
Samsonova leads the head-to-head 2-0 after a couple of comfortable victories earlier in the year. Her level seems to be improving, and she will be the favourite to win three in a row here.
