Janice Tjen produced a strong display to defeat 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez in straight sets. She largely dominated the first set and looked to be cruising at 3-1 in the second, though Fernandez would break back. Tjen was on the verge of victory as she broke again to serve for the match at 5-4 but couldn’t get the job done, with the set going to a tiebreak. The 23-year-old regrouped superbly to dominate the breaker and win 6-2 7-6 (1).

She faces former world number one Karolina Pliskova next. She beat Sloane Stephens in the first-round. A bizarre first set saw Pliskova storm into a 5-1 lead only to be broken twice in succession when attempting to serve it out. A lengthy breaker saw Pliskova finally convert her sixth set point to take the lead. Stephens fell away in the second as Pliskova sealed a 7-6 (7) 6-1 win after one hour and 33 minutes.

Pliskova will have been delighted to seal a win at a major after such trouble with injuries, but she is likely to encounter problems when up against the youthful Tjen.
