Janice Tjen earned a place in the next round of the China Open after coming from a set down to beat Anhelina Kalinina. Tjen was largely outplayed in the first set but improved her level and edged sets two and three to win 2-6 7-5 6-4. Her last event was in Guadalajara, which ended at the round-of-16 stage after a loss to Sloane Stephens.

She now plays Diane Shnaider, with the Russian receiving a bye in the first-round. Shnaider enjoyed a productive North American swing and was earmarked for a deep run at the US Open, though she lost in round three to Taylor Townsend in three sets. Shnaider’s most impressive result was a first Grand Slam semi-final at Roland Garros, beating Aryna Sabalenka along the way.

Shnaider has the weapons to dictate a lot of the rallies against Tjen, and she should be able to dominate from the start of this encounter.
