Jan-Lennard Struff qualified for the US Open after three victories, defeating top seed Arthur Cazaux in the final stage. The German has struggled for form all season but did put in another strong showing at Wimbledon, defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime to make the third-round where he threatened against Carlos Alcaraz, losing in four sets. He also reached the quarter-finals in Kitzbuhel last month, but he has a 4-9 win-loss record on hard courts this season.
Mackenzie McDonald has slipped to 102 in the world and has not made the impact he would have liked this season. He could only make the second-round of three of the four hard court tournaments in the lead up to the final slam of the year. He was very close to reaching round three of Winston-Salem last week, but was on the end of a tight loss to Italy’s Luciano Darderi in three sets.
Struff has the momentum after his victories in qualifying, but McDonald will hope to put in a strong display at his home slam. We expect this to go to four or five sets.
