Jan-Lennard Struff continued his fine run in New York as the qualifier came from a set down to beat Mackenzie McDonald in the first-round of the US Open. Struff had got through his three qualifying rounds relatively comfortably and despite going a set and a break down here, he recovered brilliantly to win 3-6 7-6 6-3 6-3. The German won 89% of his points on first serve.
Holger Rune performed strongly in his first-round match as he defeated Botic van de Zandschulp in three sets. The Dutchman was heading into the tournament in good form after his run to the final of the Winston-Salem Open, but Rune dominated most of the encounter to win in straight sets. The final set of the match saw the Dane squander a 4-0 lead, but he still came out on top in the tiebreak to win 6-3 7-6 7-6.
Struff won their previous encounter, thrashing Rune 6-0 6-2 on his way to his only ATP title in Munich last year. This is their first match on a hard court, and the German has had it far tougher this season, with plenty of losses. He has some momentum after his four wins on the spin, but Rune is the clear favourite.
