Jan Choinski qualified for his first ATP event of the season in Metz. The Briton also attempted to qualify for each Grand Slam this year, but lost in the first stage of qualifying in all four majors. He does have four Challenger Tour titles this season and is up to 131 in the world, just four places off his best career ranking which was achieved in August 2023.
He has a tough task in round one against Lorenzo Sonego. The Italian was close to making the quarter-finals in Paris, having gone a set up against Daniil Medvedev, but the former world number one edged a tight tiebreak in the second and came back to win. Sonego has not had the best of campaigns, despite the season starting so promisingly in Melbourne when he reached the last eight of the Australian Open. Nevertheless, his other strong results this season have taken place indoors and he should be seen as a contender to make a deep run.
Sonego should have far too much for Choinski in round one.
