The Italian made the most of his reprieve with an eye-catching 6-7 6-3 6-4 win over 24th seed Denis Shapovalov.
This will be their first tour-level encounter but they have done battle in qualifying with Mensik easing to a 6-4 6-2 success in Miami last year.
These will be similar conditions and Mensik has the maturity and experience of being a Masters 1000 champion now, so it’ll be a tall order for the Italian world number 98 to produce another shock on this surface.
