Jakub Mensik vs Joao Fonseca prediction

Jakub Mensik advanced to his first ever Grand Slam quarter-final as he held off a fightback from Andrey Rublev. Mensik comfortably took the first set and despite being broken when serving for the second, he edged ahead in the tiebreak. Rublev would fight back in the next two sets, but Mensik broke in the eighth game of the decider and then saved two break point in the final game as he won 6-3 7-6 (6) 4-6 2-6 6-3.

He will now face Joao Fonseca, who is also into the quarters of a major for the first time as he beat three-time slam finalist Casper Ruud in four sets. Fonseca had beaten 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the previous round and he performed strongly here, crucially saving three set points in the second set tiebreak as he went on to win 7-5 7-6 (8) 5-7 6-2 after three hours and 55 minutes.

Neither player has had an easy route to this stage, and another physically demanding contest could be on the cards between two of the most highly rated youngsters in the sport. Fonseca has more time to construct points on clay, and he has all the momentum after high profile wins over Djokovic and Ruud. Mensik is likely to remain competitive with his serve and power, but Fonseca may just have the slight edge.

Jakub Mensik vs Joao Fonseca tip: Under 38.5 games
