Ben Shelton must see this year’s Canadian Open as a golden chance to secure an ATP 1000 title when looking at how the draw has shaped out. As it stands, he is the only top ten seed remaining in the tournament with the next highest being fellow young USA star Learner Tien. Shelton is yet to drop a set in Montreal, most recently dispatching Joao Fonseca 6-3, 7-6.
Jakub Mensik has played good tennis to reach this stage of the tournament but it is worth noting that he is yet to take on a seeded opponent until now. The draw has worked in the favour of this 20-year-old but now he faces the acid test against a player whom Mensik got the better of twice in 2025, including once on the hard court.
However, Shelton is further along in his development as a world class player and when taking into account how he has performed so far in Montreal, the former US Open semi-finalist is in a good place to go even further. Back him to gain some revenge on Mensik and even up their head-to-head record.
