Jakub Mensik picked up his first win over Alex de Minaur at the sixth attempt as he recovered from a tough start to make the round-of-16 at Roland Garros. Mensik struggled physically towards the end of his five set epic against Mariano Navone in the second-round, and he seemed to still be feeling the effects in the first set of this one as he won just five points in total. However, he quickly began to dominate and De Minaur had no answers, with the Czech winning 0-6 6-2 6-2 6-3.
He now faces Andrey Rublev for a place in the last eight. The 28-year-old continued his impressive progress at the event, beating Nuno Borges in straight sets. Rublev recovered from a deficit of 3-1 in the second set as he edged ahead in all three to win 7-5 7-6 (2) 7-6 (2).
Mensik leads the head-to-head 2-0 after a couple of wins in Doha and Shanghai across 2024. Rublev has performed strongly so far and if he is able to dictate, he could prove to be too much for Mensik across five sets.
