Jakub Mensik made it third time lucky against Hubert Hurkacz to race into the round of 16 in Dubai.
The Czech had lost his first two encounters with the Pole but was rock solid here as he registered a 6-4 7-6 victory.
The sixth seed now takes on Alexei Popyrin who claimed just a second win in his last 13 outings with a hard-fought 3-6 6-3 7-5 triumph over Kamik Majchrzak.
This will be their third showdown with Mensik winning the previous two in straight sets back in 2024.
Popyrin will be delighted to have won two of his last three after six months of on-court woe, but he will need to find extra gears to defeat an in-form Mensik, and all signs suggest the Czech starlet will come up trumps once again.
