Jacob Fearnley advanced to the first-round of the Paris Masters after making it through the qualifying rounds without dropping a set in his two matches. The Brit had been on a poor run ever since his first-round loss to Joao Fonseca at Wimbledon all the way back in June, though his form seems to have picked up in the last two weeks. He also qualified for the Vienna Open and pushed second seed and world number three Alexander Zverev all the way in round one, losing in a third set tiebreak.
If the Brit can replicate that display, he will be confident of his chances against an out-of-form Andrey Rublev. The Russian is suffering from an extended period of poor form, with no victory on the tour since he won his third-round match at the US Open. He also competed in Vienna but was on the end of a surprising first-round loss to Cameron Norrie in three sets.
In usual circumstances, Rublev would be a heavy favourite to win. However, Fearnley seems to have raised his game and will relish the opportunity to face the Russian, who is low on confidence at the moment.
