Jack Draper will clash with surprise package of the week Matteo Arnaldi for a place in the Madrid last four.
The British number one will be contemplating the prospect of a second Masters 1000 title after sweeping to an outstanding 6-2 6-2 win over Tommy Paul to move into the business end of the tournament.
The fifth seed’s serve and ferocious forehand have been firing all week long and if the combo continues it’s hard to see Arnaldi finding the solutions necessary to deny him.
The Italian will remain quietly confident of the upset given he has already vanquished a sub par Novak Djokovic this week and the world number 44 was equally impressive in despatching 16th seed Frances Tiafoe by a 6-3 7-5 scoreline last time out.
This will be their first ever encounter and although Arnaldi is happiest on clay and also likes an upset, it’s hard to back against Draper when he’s playing the sort of scintillating tennis that has him closing-in on the world’s top five.
