Jack Draper made a winning return at the Eastbourne Open as he overcame lucky loser Marcos Giron in straight sets to advance to the round-of-16 stage. Draper comfortably took the first set and despite failing to serve it out in the second, he edged ahead in the tiebreak to seal a 6-4 7-6 (5) win. This was his first match under the tutelage of new coach Andy Murray.
He will play a fellow Brit in the next round as he takes on Jack Pinnington Jones. He came from a set down to beat Marco Trungelliti. The 23-year-old broke in the 11th game of the deciding set and served it out to win 5-7 6-3 7-5. Pinnington Jones put in a strong showing against Denis Shapovalov at Queen’s Club last week.
Draper will have benefited from getting valuable match time under his belt in his first match back and should be able to produce a more polished display this time around.
