Iva Jovic comfortably advanced through her first-round match at the Australian Open after a straight sets win over Katie Volynets. The 18-year-old broke on five separate occasions to win 6-2 6-3 after an hour and 28 minutes. Volynets broke to go 2-1 up in the second set but Jovic responded immediately and won five of the next six games to seal victory. Jovic made the final of the Hobart International last week and has won eight of her 10 matches in 2026.

She faces Priscilla Hon in round two. The Australian recovered from a slow start to advance in Melbourne as her opponent Marina Stakusic was forced to retire in the third set. Hon had broken to lead 5-3 in the decider, with Stakusic unable to continue due to leg cramps. This was Hon’s first victory at the Australian Open since 2020.

Jovic has already made strides at the start of this season, and her all-court game is enough to overcome Hon in straight sets.
