Iva Jovic booked her place in the second-round with a straight sets victory over Magdalena Frech. The 18-year-old was particularly effective on return, winning 60% of points against Frech’s first serve and converting six of 15 break point opportunities. Jovic arrived in New York ranked a career high of number 14 following an excellent season that included a first Grand Slam quarter-final at the Australian Open. Her immediate build-up was less convincing though, with a third-round Cincinnati Open defeat to Marie Bouzkova following an earlier loss to Alina Korneeva in Toronto.

Francesa Jones had to work considerably harder, but she still came through her rain-disrupted opener with Magda Linette. The Brit converted all four of her break points, winning 6-4 1-6 6-3. She has now won four consecutive matches in New York after qualifying wins over Nura Brancaccio, Mona Barthel and Joanna Garland. Jones also arrived with considerable momentum after winning back-to-back WTA 125 titles in Rome and Palermo earlier this summer.

Jones is playing with confidence and has already demonstrated her resilience this week, but Jovic represents a considerable increase in quality.
