Iva Jovic came through a gruelling third-round battle with Alexandra Eala to book her place into the next stage of the US Open. The 18-year-old was 4-2 down in the decider but fought back to win 7-5 3-6 7-5 after more than three hours on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Jovic had beaten Francesca Jones in round two after opening her campaign with a victory over Magdalena Frech.

She now faces world number four Coco Gauff for a place in the quarter-finals. Gauff beat Cristina Bucsa in straight sets. It wasn’t all plain sailing for the two-time Grand Slam singles champion, as she found herself 3-1 down at the start of the match, but she went on to win 6-3 6-4. Gauff has now won all six sets at this tournament and is on a nine-match winning streak, following her success at the Cincinnati Open last month.

Gauff leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a three set victory at the Italian Open earlier this year. Jovic is will need to maintain a high attacking level to consistently hit through one of the best defenders on tour.
