Iga Swiatek was handed a walkover in the third-round as her opponent Marta Kostyuk was forced to withdraw from the tournament before their match could take place. Swiatek had begun her campaign in Cincinnati with a convincing 6-1 6-4 victory over Anastasia Potapova, winning 90% of her first serve points. The Wimbledon champion is aiming to win this event for the first time.
Her round-of-16 opponent will be Sorana Cirstea. The Romanian battled her way past Yue Yuan in the third-round, coming from a set down to win. The 35-year-old squandered a set point in set one but showed wonderful fighting spirit to come back from deficits of 4-2 in the second and 2-0 in the third as she won 6-7 6-4 6-4.
Swiatek leads the head-to-head 4-0 and 3-0 on outdoor hard courts. The Pole has won her last two matches against Cirstea 6-1 6-1 and will be well rested and raring to go for this one from the start. Another comfortable victory in favour of the six-time Grand Slam champion could well be on the cards.
