Iga Swiatek began her quest for a seventh Grand Slam title with a straight sets win over Xiyu Wang in the first-round of the US Open. The Pole, who won her first title in 11 months at the Canadian Open in August, did not even concede a break point on serve as she won 6-2 6-3. Swiatek, the 2022 champion, has now won 11 of her last 12 matches.

She faces Nadia Podoroska in the second-round. She recovered from a set down to beat Simona Waltert. There were 12 breaks of serve in the entirety of the match, with the Argentine winning 4-6 7-6 (3) 6-3.

Podoroska will need to recover quickly from that physical first-round battle, but Swiatek’s relentless returning presents a considerable step up. The former world number one should be able to dictate with her heavier groundstrokes and consistently pressurise Podoroska’s serve. Swiatek is the overwhelming favourite to advance here.
