Iga Swiatek was one set away from making the semi-finals of the WTA Finals against Elena Rybakina but her level dropped alarmingly as the Kazakhstani came back to crush her in the final two sets. Swiatek started to make numerous errors on each wing as she lost 3-6 6-0 6-1.
Amanda Anisimova is her final group stage opponent. The American got back on track in the event as she came from a set and a break down to beat Madison Keys. Anisimova was perilously close to being eliminated when she went 3-1 down in the second set but she started to find her rhythm and broke Keys on four separate occasions in set two and three to win 4-6 6-3 6-2.
The head-to-head is locked at 1-1 after their two matches this year. Swiatek crushed Anisimova without the loss of a single game in the Wimbledon final, but the American did gain revenge in their quarter-final match at the US Open as she won 6-4 6-3 on her way to making her second successive Grand Slam final.
Swiatek may start as the favourite but her collapse against Rybakina was alarming, and Anisimova will take huge confidence from her victory against the 2023 Tour Finals champion at the US Open. She’s certainly worth a punt on this occasion.
