In their first final since 1993, Montreal Canadiens were unable to get off to a good start as they were blown away by Tampa Bay Lightning. The 24-time Stanley Cup champions, the most successful side in NHL history, underwhelmed in game 1 and will need to be much better here, although in their bid to end Canada’s 28-year Stanley Cup drought, going 2-0 down looks a real possibility in Tampa.

TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING LOWDOWN

Reigning champions Tampa Bay Lightning earned a great win in game 1 of the Stanley Cup final as they ran out 1-5 winners and home ice advantage is theirs once again in game 2. The Lightning got the defense of their title off to a great start as they continued their strong form at Amalie Arena with leading play-off scorer Nikita Kucherov guiding his side to the win with two goals and an assist.

Tampa Bay Lightning were too good for Montreal Canadiens are they kicked off the Stanley Cup final in brilliant fashion. They will now look to move 2-0 up before game 3 takes the tie to Montreal but the Canadiens have it all to do. They were nowhere near the level they needed to be in the opening clash and with four straight wins on home ice, the Lightning should prove to be too good once again.
