Hugo Grenier showed a lot of fight to get through the qualifying in Rotterdam. He defeated Jan Choinski in straight sets but his encounter with Thijs Boogaard was anything but straight-forward. He went a set down and despite going a break up in the second, he was pegged back and forced to head into a tiebreak. Despite being a few points from defeat, he prevailed and went on to win the match. The 29-year-old is ranked 188 in the world.
He faces Jan-Lennard Struff in the first-round. Struff is yet to make a significant breakthrough in 2026 as he lost in the first-round of the Hong Kong Open, failed to make it out of qualifying in Auckland and was on the end of a five set defeat to Vit Kopriva in the Australian Open first-round.
They played for the first time in February last year, with Struff defeating Grenier in three sets at the Open Occitanie. The 2023 Madrid Open finalist is yet to get going in this campaign, but the experienced German starts as the favourite here.
