Hugo Gaston could be set for another thriller after coming from a set down to beat Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the first round.
The creative Frenchman endured a bit of a rollercoaster before prevailing 5-7 6-3 6-4 against the Argentine.
Gaston cut a frustrated figure at times as he only converted six of his whopping 17 break points, while he coughed up his own serve too easily with Cerundolo taking five of his eight opportunities.
His next opponent, seventh seed Luciano Darderi, had a more routine passage courtesy of a 6-4 6-4 win over American Tristan Boyer. The Italian did not drop serve and made it count on two of nine break opportunities to set up a third meeting with Gaston.
Darderi lost their most recent clash 6-3 6-3 at Indian Wells a few weeks ago, but did prevail 6-4 6-3 when they met on clay in Cordoba in 2023.
This is a tough one to call and the value may well be in it going the distance with both players likely to play with a variety that should make for an enjoyable watch.
