Hugo Gaston has not featured on the tour since withdrawing from Roland Garros before his second-round match with Ben Shelton was due to take place. Gaston had beaten compatriot Ugo Blanchet in five sets in round one. He has not won a match at Wimbledon since making the second-round in 2022, his best finish so far.
Jakub Mensik will be his opponent in the first-round. The Czech has struggled to be truly consistent and get a run of wins going after his Miami Open triumph. A disappointing end to the clay season saw him lose in the second-round of the French Open and then in the first-round of a Challenger in Prostejov. The transition on grass started off well with a win over Cameron Norrie in the first-round of Queen’s but he then suffered a loss to Roberto Bautista Agut in the next round.
Mensik rounded off his grass court preparations with a quarter-final appearance at Eastbourne. The 19-year-old’s serve will be a big weapon for him in these opening rounds and he’s likely to start with a straight sets win over Gaston.
