Hugo Gaston continued his strong form as he comfortably got past fellow Frenchman Terence Atmane in straight sets. He needed just 51 minutes to win 6-4 6-1 as he broke the Atmane serve on four occasions, while he didn’t even concede a break point on his own serve. Gaston won his last event at the Brest Challenger, while he also made the final of another tournament in Roanne a week earlier. Overall, he has 10 wins from his last 11 matches.
He faces Daniel Altmaier in the next round. Altmaier produced an impressive display to beat Arthur Rinderknech in straight sets. Rinderknech had turned heads with his run to the final of the Shanghai Masters at the start of last month, but the German was rarely troubled in this encounter as he won 6-4 6-4. Altmaier performed well in Paris last week as he beat three-time Grand Slam finalist Casper Ruud and took Felix Auger-Aliassime to three sets in their third-round match.
Gaston has found form towards the end of this campaign and will have home support on this side. Nevertheless, Altmaier has more high-level experience and can be a difficult player to beat indoors.
