Hubert Hurkacz advanced to the next round of Wimbledon as he beat three-time Grand Slam finalist Casper Ruud in straight sets. The Pole, who reached the last four in 2021, dominated the first two sets and was on the verge of victory after breaking Ruud in the 11th game of the third. He failed to serve the match out, but he saved a set point in the tiebreak as he clinched a 6-4 6-2 7-6 (7) win.
He will play Sebastian Ofner in the next round. The Austrian impressed in his opening match as he beat Hamad Medjedovic in five sets. Ofner was viewed as the underdog in this matchup and did go down two sets to one, but he staged a fine comeback to win 1-6 6-2 4-6 6-4 6-4. This is the third time he has advanced from the first-round of this tournament.
Hurkacz leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a win in Geneva last year. The former world number six is a threat on this surface with his strong first serve and is a firm favourite to win.
