Hubert Hurkacz is through to the second-round of the French Open after an impressive four set win over Jaume Munar. The two-time Masters 1000 winner breezed through the first two sets and despite a slight wobble in the third, came through to win 6-3 6-3 2-6 6-3. The 29-year-old struggled in terms of form earlier this year, but he has managed to regain some consistency during this clay court swing.
He now takes on Frances Tiafoe. The American beat compatriot Eliot Spizzirri in four sets. Spizzirri was competing in his first match since February following an injury, but he was still able to make this a competitive encounter as he levelled it up at one set apiece. Tiafoe recovered to win 6-3 6-7 (5) 6-4 6-3.
Tiafoe leads the head-to-head 4-3, but this is their first match against each other on clay. The American’s movement and creativity could give him the edge, but Hurkacz has improved on this surface and should be able to keep his opponent in check if his first serve percentage remains high.
