Hubert Hurkacz began his Halle Open campaign with a brilliant straight sets victory over Andrey Rublev. The Pole, who won this tournament in 2022 and reached the final two years later, was dominant throughout as he did not even face a break point and won 90% of his first serve points, wrapping up a 6-3 6-2 win after just an hour and eight minutes.
He will now face Daniel Altmaier in the next round. The German notched up his first victory of the grass court season after beating qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili. He went a break down at the start of the second set but recovered to win 7-5 6-4. Altmaier was defeated by Frances Tiafoe in round one of the Stuttgart Open last week.
Hurkacz leads the ATP head-to-head 1-0, as he defeated Altmaier at the Madrid Open two years ago. If he can serve as well as he did against Rublev, he could take control of this encounter.
