THE LOWDOWN
This looks to be the most unpredictable race of the opening day of the Festival with numerous horses capable of coming out on top in the Juvenile Handicap Hurdle (Fred Winter). Many boast consistent form with Busselton, Coltor and Riviere D’etel among those with chances while the combination of Willie Mullins and Paul Townend will of course be a threat with Saint Sam. The four-year-old is yet to get his nose in front since moving to Mullins’ yard but showed improvement when second at Leopardstown in his previous race last month. Houx Gris is also another interesting proposition for Paul Nicholls whose third at Chepstow in January was a solid performance despite the finishing distance behind the winner but it did mean he has a place and a win under his belt over hurdles.
THE PREDICTION
There are numerous chances in this race and it would not be a surprise if a big-priced winner goes in but preference is for Houx Gris. Paul Nicholls has managed to win this race three times with French horses and another success could be on the cards here. His third on debut for Nicholls last time out suggested there is more to come from the 4-year-old who cost €200,000 and looks to be a very interesting proposition with a place in the frame a good shout.
